The Sooning Street bridge became a casualty during the rain event, on Saturday locals alerted the council that the road had begun to sink and a hole appeared in the road, the bridge was closed to traffic.
The MCN has received photos of crack in main pipe which is believed to have caused the damage.
A spokesperson for TCC told the MCN “The recent heavy rainfall has damaged the culvert under the bridge crossing Gustav Creek on Sooning St and due to community safety concerns Council has closed the bridge until an engineering assessment can be conducted”.
The spokesperson went on to say “Council is endeavouring to have this assessment and any necessary repairs completed as quickly as possible, however given the Christmas holiday period there are expected to be delays.
Until these works are conducted and the bridge deemed safe there will be a detour in place, enabling access to and from Nelly Bay.”
Many locals criticised council for not performing maintenance on the drains , culverts and creek gullies on the island prior to the onset of the wet season.
