Member For Townsville Mr. Adam Baillie attended the Magnetic Island Resident & Ratepayers Assoc. meeting on Saturday 7th March, with 45 people in attendance. He confirmed, meetings had been held with the Dept of Lands, Department of Environment, Department of Transport and Roads , Department of Emergency Services regarding the restoration and reopening of the Radical Bay Road.

Mr. Baillie said “The road had been closed by the previous Government in 2021 without community consultation and the Crisafulli Govt will be reopening the road. It was one of our election promises and we will deliver the project.”

Mr. Baillie went to say ”Our first priority is put the road in, and, restore safe travel for our emergency services vehicles and our emergency services personnel. Then open the road for the wider community so they can enjoy three of the most beautiful bays on the island”.

“ The government will be doing the work, the road is unallocated state land, works are set to take place after Easter.  You will not immediately see machinery on site, but planning works have already begun. TMR said they were ready to go, we decided to wait until after this wet season".

“We will be looking to engage local contractors to do the work. We have money allocated for the project and we will deliver the project within budget and in good time”.

“ We are not planning to build a highway down to Radical Bay, the road will not widened. Once the road is open, we will then look at  bins, toilets etc”.

Mr. Baillie  encouraged anyone who had not  filled out  his Have Your Survey, which will be open for another 2 weeks, let us know your views and any issues regarding the project.”

He concluded by saying “ I would like to thank the Magnetic Island Community and thank you to MIRRA  for inviting me.”

The MCN will continue to keep you updated.

The article about Adam Baillie’s progress report on the Radical Bay track re-opening was accurate as far as it went. But Mr Baillie also referred to the need for the government to engage with Townsville City Council about long term maintenance and upkeep, especially for the road surface itself but also for controlling unauthorised camping, traffic control, littering etc. He referred to his hope that the new mayor would take a different approach from his predecessors. I think he should look at a bit of history.

There was only ever one “road” at Radical Bay and that was really a street that ran from the middle of the beachfront Esplanade between the freehold blocks to the back of the bay. …
