Townsville City Council is pleased to share an update on the Gustav Creek Structure Restoration works in Nelly Bay, with key stages of construction now progressing.

From Friday 22 May 2026, works will move into an important phase, with a crane being mobilised on site to begin installing the new bridge deck beams.

These activities mark a significant step towards reopening the structure to the community by the end of July, weather permitting.

As part of this phase, works will continue over approximately two months, with standard construction hours of 6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

To support timely completion, the project will temporarily shift to a seven-day schedule, with Sunday works kept to a minimum where possible.

During this period, nearby residents, businesses, and visitors may notice:

  • Increased construction activity, including machinery and vehicle movement

  • Some dust, noise and minor vibrations

  • Temporary traffic changes, including short-term closures of the pedestrian bridge, minor delays, and reduced speed limits.

Pedestrian access across the bridge will remain managed by traffic controllers when required to maintain safety during crane operations.
