In what will be welcome news to Magnetic Island locals and visitors, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has confirmed maintenance works on the Picnic Bay Jetty have commenced today.
The heritage-listed structure has been closed since February 2025, after severe weather exacerbated damage to the jetty, making it unsafe.
The repairs to restore access and safety will include securing, replacing or mending deck planks, kerbing and other parts of the jetty that posed a risk to the public.
The works are targeted to the immediate repairs to allow the jetty to be safely opened as soon as possible.
Member for Townsville, Adam Baillie MP says works are expected to be completed by 21 August, weather permitting.
“I heard the Magnetic Island community’s call for action on the Picnic Bay Jetty and advocated for the works to be prioritised.
“It would be great to see this jetty open and accessible to the public ahead of the Magnetic Island Race Week, which I know many locals and visitors have been hoping for.
“This is such an iconic part of the Island’s landscape so seeing it reopen for members of the public to enjoy will be warmly welcomed by the community,” he said.
Repairs will be undertaken by SMC Marine Pty Ltd, with the jetty closed to the public until works have been completed and final condition assessments are undertaken.
Maritime Safety Queensland urges mariners and the public to please use caution around the worksite, both on water and on land, while the repairs are carried out.

Baillie has heard the call from the community but it took six months to respond? This guy doesn’t go anywhere without a cameraman. I’m looking forward to the day we can vote him out! What an insincere show pony.
