Nominate exceptional Townsville locals for Australia Day Awards
Recognise the special people in the Townsville community who go above and beyond to help improve the lives of those around them by nominating them for an Australia Day Award.
Nominations for the prestigious awards are now open, with seven categories to choose from: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Arts and Culture Award, Community Volunteer Award, Senior Sports Award, Junior Sports Award and Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Award.
Young Citizen of the Year 2021 Emily Walker said it was “an honour” to be nominated for her work lobbying against single-use plastics.
“It was great to know that all of my hard work over the past couple of years had been appreciated and recognised through Townsville citizens nominating me,” Miss Walker said.
“Winning Young Citizen of the Year 2021 gave me the opportunity to spread more awareness around the problems around single-use plastics and the damage that they do to the environment.”
Community Volunteer Award 2021 winner Peter Shefford said winning an Australia Day Award had many layers of significance.
“I’m a proud Aussie so anything associated with Australia Day means a lot, it’s really quite humbling actually,” Mr Shefford said.
“It’s fantastic to be acknowledged by so many fantastic, great people out there in the community.”
Mayor Jenny Hill said this was one of the best ways to recognise locals who stepped up and did outstanding work for their city.
“Now is the time to fill out a nomination form and make sure that the humble heroes in Townsville have a light shone on their achievements,” Cr Hill said.
“I know that our city has some incredibly dedicated and selfless individuals who continuously go above and beyond for the betterment of the community and that is something that deserves to be celebrated.”
Nominations are open now and close on Tuesday December 14.
