Nelly Bay Dredging Update

At the session, we heard many concerns about the condition of Kelly Street and surrounding roads following record rainfall earlier this year. With funding now secured for bridge and road repairs, Council has decided to defer dredging to prioritise completion of these vital infrastructure works.

We now anticipate dredging will begin in early 2026, weather permitting. Council remains committed to our current project plan. We will, of course, use the additional time available to make any further improvements we can, particularly around plans for the management and ultimate reuse of dredged material.

Providing our community with more information

At our information session, there were many great questions and issues raised, and while our Project lead Matt endeavoured to provide answers, it was a lot of information.

We’ve therefore put together a question and answer document that you can now access on the project page on Council’s website.

Hopefully, this provides responses to many of the questions and concerns shared at the session – particularly around the process of assessing options for material treatment and disposal, the health / environmental safety and management of the dredged material, the plans and processes involved, and the potential reuse of the material on the island.
