INTELLIGENT OR DECEPTIVE ?

The latest Magnetic Island Project Update again carries the headline "Magnetic Island: Investing in a Sustainable Future." Residents might reasonably ask what Council means by "sustainable". Large parts of Magnetic Island still lack reticulated sewerage, A grade treated water is not discharged offshore as recommended by GBRMPA, and long-standing stormwater problems continue to affect many homes.

Council promotes "$20 million committed to 14 capital projects". Yet the accompanying list includes disaster recovery projects, renewals, maintenance and works funded from other sources. How much of the advertised $20 million represents new Council-funded capital investment on Magnetic Island? Residents deserve a clear breakdown rather than a promotional headline.

Council has completed creek crossings along the West Point Road, improving access into the Conservation Park, yet has consistently opposed improvements to the existing access road to Radical Bay. Residents are entitled to ask why one access project is supported while another is resisted.  What explains this apparent inconsistency?

Who is responsible for ensuring these community updates accurately distinguish between new capital investment, maintenance, renewal works and externally funded projects? The community deserves information that informs, not promotional material that risks leaving a misleading impression.

Sincerely,

Michael Schmidt.

The reason they don't want any part of the Radical Bay road that it's too expensive to maintain. It's been duck shoved from State and Local Government and Private enterprise for decades and nobody wants to take ocver ownership.

You are absolutely correct, Nick. The gazetted local government road to West Point provides all weather access to critical infrastructure (the water supply pump station) and around fifty (50) rate paying freehold properties. The not-even-gazetted, nothing-to-do-with-TCC government-owned bush track to the front door of the one owner resort site at Radical Bay benefits no one except the developer. It can't even provide legal public access to the beachfront because the Queensland government closed the one gazetted road through the bay to the Esplanade at the deliberate request of the private owner.
