BLAST FROM THE PAST

Pictured above: Alert at Horseshoe Bay jetty 1935

This photo features for the month of March this year in the fabulous annual Magnetic Musuem calendar. The photo was a gift to the Musuem from B Dunstone.

The caption reads: Townsville Harbour Board bought the tug Alert from the Government of South Africa November 1907. As well as towing she was used for salvage operations and for fire fighting, her freshwater capacity being 110 tons. She took the Townsville Harbour Board Employees' Social Club to Horseshoe Bay for its annual picnic in 1935.

If you are a new resident to Magnetic Island or visiting the island, a visit to the Magnetic Museum in Picnic Bay is very worth while. It is filled with a treasure trove of the Magnetic Island's history.
