TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport is expanding to provide more young athletes with skills to kick start their sports career.

For the first time, Year 11 or 12 students in Townsville will get the opportunity to participate in the Academy of Sport through TAFE at School.

While completing their senior high school studies, students will also attend Certificate II in Sport Coaching training at TAFE Queensland and local sporting facilities one day a week.

The hands-on training will provide students with skills to work under the supervision of a coach to conduct coaching sessions in community-based sports clubs and organisations.

TAFE Queensland has partnered with local sporting codes and coaches to roll out the program for gifted young athletes from a wide range of sports including, rugby league, AFL and basketball.

Through the initiative, participants will also be introduced to sports industry professionals for specialised training workshops.

Successful completion of the program will qualify students to continue their studies post-school through TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport, which is designed to provide high school graduates with further education and employment opportunities and elite athlete development pathways.

Applications are open and Year 11 or 12 students wishing to join the TAFE at School Academy of Sport program need to speak to their school VET coordinator to apply.
