A Midsummer Night’s Dream to delight Townsville audiences

Queensland Ballet is set to captivate audiences in Townsville with Liam Scarlett’s whimsical interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

After it first charmed Brisbane audiences in 2016, the company will bring this timeless classic to the Townsville Civic Theatre, presenting a one-night-only performance on Wednesday, March 8.

Community and Cultural Development Chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney was delighted to see this much-loved show make its way north so it can be enjoyed by the people of Townsville.

“Welcoming the Queensland Ballet for A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a major coup for our city and the Townsville Civic Theatre,” Cr Greaney said.

A Midsummer Night's Dream has captured the hearts of many, young and old, in the centuries since it was written and I can’t wait to see this take on the classic tale.

“We are very fortunate to be able enjoy a world-class show like this right here in our backyard and I’d encourage anyone interested in the show to get in quick and book their tickets.”

Brimming with mischief and mayhem, Shakespeare's fantastical masterpiece A Midsummer Night’s Dream interweaves the magical realm of fairies and woodland creatures with the mortal world of unrequited lovers.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a co-production between Queensland Ballet and Royal New Zealand Ballet, and Queensland Ballet’s Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO said the company’s regional touring program is often a highlight of their year.

“We are incredibly grateful to tour across Queensland annually and to have the opportunity to share world-class productions on the smaller stages across the state,” Mr Li said.

"There is an amazing appreciation for our artform in the regions and we are always welcomed with open arms when visiting communities such as Townsville.”

As part of the Regional Tour program, members of the Townsville dance community will also get to take ballet for a pirouette.

Dancers aged from 2-17 are invited to participate in Queensland Ballet’s Community Classes on Wednesday, March 8, where participants will be mentored by Queensland Ballet’s highly skilled teaching artists.
